- Description: Your eyes, your inner ear, and the sense of where your feet are.
- Author: Walt Brennan

| How it works Standing still looks like nothing at all. It is three systems arguing, and settling it, over and over. Nobody sits you down and explains this, so here it is plainly. Your brain works out where your body is from three feeds at once. The eyes, which tell it where level is. The inner ear, which feels tilt and turn. And a feed coming up from your feet, ankles, knees and hips, reporting where every joint is sitting. A quick question · tap to answer Can you stand with your eyes closed for ten seconds? Try it beside a counter. Tap one and just press send. [Yes, easily](mailto:hello@thehealthbriefdaily.com?subject=Eyes%20closed%3A%20easy&body=Yes%2C%20easily.) [A few seconds](mailto:hello@thehealthbriefdaily.com?subject=Eyes%20closed%3A%20few&body=A%20few%20seconds.) [No, I wobble](mailto:hello@thehealthbriefdaily.com?subject=Eyes%20closed%3A%20wobble&body=No%2C%20I%20wobble.) Why losing one feed is survivable The brain does not weigh the three equally. It leans on whichever one is clearest at that moment. Shut your eyes and it leans harder on the other two. Stand on a thick carpet or a mattress and the feed from your feet goes vague, so it leans on your eyes and your inner ear instead. Which is why a dark hallway is harder than a lit one, and a soft floor is harder than a hard one. You are not imagining that… a feed has been taken away. Try it at the counter. Stand on one leg. Now shut your eyes. There it is. Why age is the trouble All three fade, and not at the same pace. The inner ear loses the hair cells that sense movement. One count put the loss of nerve cells in the balance centers of the brain at around 3% a decade. Eyes take in less light, less contrast, less depth. And here is the part I did not expect. Older people lean more on the feed from their feet and joints than on their eyes or inner ear… which is awkward, because that feed is wearing out too. What this has to do with heel to toe Monday's move makes more sense now. Stand with your feet apart and your base is wide. Your weight can wander a good way before it leaves the platform. Put one foot in front of the other and that base is a few inches across. There is almost no margin left in it. The three systems have to be quick and they have to agree. So that hold is not a parlor trick. It takes your margin away on purpose, to show what is underneath… and then to build it back. How common all this is In one year about 27 in every 100 Americans over 65 reported at least one fall. Around 10 in 100 reported an injury from one. In 2021 nearly 39,000 people died from a fall. I am not putting those numbers in to frighten anybody. I am putting them in because the thing that moves them is free, and it is in this newsletter all week. The part I cannot tell you Which of your three feeds is the weak one. Nobody can, from a newsletter. Poor balance is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Behind it can sit an inner ear problem, numb feet, blood pressure that drops when you stand up, failing eyesight, or a medicine cabinet doing more than it was asked to. So balance that is getting worse, or that arrived suddenly, is worth a proper look. Bring the pill bottles. The three feeds Eyes for where level is. Inner ear for tilt and turn. Position sense from feet, ankles, knees and hips. The brain leans on whichever is clearest and shifts its weighting when one drops out. Why the dark is harder You have removed one feed of three. On a soft surface you have blurred a second. Both are normal to find harder, and both are worth knowing before you get up in the night. And one small comfort to end on. In other words the weighting is a skill and not a fixed setting… which is a good part of what balance practice is actually training. When to stop and call your doctor See your doctor if unsteadiness came on suddenly, if the room spins or the world tilts, if you have blacked out or nearly did, if your feet are numb, burning or dead underfoot, if one side of the body feels weak or clumsy, or if your hearing changed along with your balance. Take a list of everything you swallow, prescription and otherwise. Quick poll · tap to answer Is your balance worse in the dark? Tap one and just press send. [Much worse](mailto:hello@thehealthbriefdaily.com?subject=Dark%3A%20much&body=Much%20worse.) [A little](mailto:hello@thehealthbriefdaily.com?subject=Dark%3A%20little&body=A%20little%20worse.) [No difference](mailto:hello@thehealthbriefdaily.com?subject=Dark%3A%20none&body=No%20difference.) I read every reply. Here is to three systems arguing well,**Walt** |
